The end of the cave at present (c20m) is just choked with sand with a 3-6inch gap above it, there is sometimes a small draught present, in wet weather the cave acts as a flood overflow - presumed to be a Bean Pot overflow (your guess is as good as ours) given the volume of water issuing from the cave.
Take me to the Lower Arch(ive) - a diary of digging during 2002/2003

01/11/03- After a huge break away from the dig Dunc and Pete decided to inspect the place, we found a spade at another dig and away we went! The sand had mostly dried out which made life a bit easier. We built a sand barrier to stop some slop going back to the dig face (have to see how it copes!). We pushed the cave a few feet more to the point where the passage appears to be now bending left... |
11/10/09- Six years on, the cave remains the same, one drag-tray and no tools (but a rabbit has made a home in the cave, probably not such a good idea when it starts raining!) A brief inspection was undertaken with a view to recommence digging.

17/10/09- A solo mission by the club mole; Alex. 5ft of progress was made, unfortunately digging on your own and dragging a tray right out to the surface is time consuming. Alternative arrangements are being worked upon for late Oct/early Nov so we can make best use of digging time and to counter any weather issues we may have! |
31/10/09- A three hour solo session by Alex resulted in only a couple of feet of progress, but more space was created in the passage - something which will be worked upon some more on the next dig.
19/12/09- Thankfully the cave was now dry though evidence of flooding was plain to see as all the boards were upside down and needed re-seating. Also I noticed a hole that I filled in last time to stop the boards tipping has unfilled it self again. It appears the water drains somewhere below the boards? worth a look? I may take up those boards on my next visit and see if I can make heads or tales of it. Anyhow we started digging but no one else except me actually could reach the dig face and I agreed it was rather awkward to dig there, so we spent a few hours extending the dig face tunnel. Now the 10ft of passage I dug on my earlier trips is now a 10ft crawl not a 10ft flat out squirm. No real progress was made at the dig face it self. We were done for around two and headed down to good old Wheatsheaf.
Next digging session - When it's dry in 2010??
