XandarModeratorHowever, I was also the first person to clear out the entrance and slide through the water of diseases. When Chris says it smells, that’s an understatement it smelt like a blocked drain, that had been left for several months. Lets say I was dry heaving on the other-side and then Don insisted I bailed it from the other side once in. Don would not exit the cave either as a spider guarded it…
I was also the first over the squeeze into the chamber beyond and I did not know if I would fit or not and get stuck. I still went head-first though as I knew it was my best chance.
So we are all hero’s, except maybe Chris he did nout lol.
But what good is being a hero anyway? Don almost fell to his death/got stuck in a hole (6m pitch according to guide book) and I have probably contracted Wields disease from that water.
P.s. If anyone gorge walks along this, Upper Black dub cave is a great way to bypass the black-dub waterfall.
XandarModeratorThat small rift chamber is not mentioned in Northern caves, infact the rift is a too tight rift apparently. So not certain how many had been down the hole before us let alone through the dig (Well it would have been impossible to enter without digging).
XandarModeratorOh 14m deep and it looks like it was going over a drop after that too tight bit in the stream it won’t be long until it’s the deepest cave in Weredale.
XandarModeratorRed mud, I think don is getting mixed up with the cave/mine we visited in the Lakes. Pikedaw is only muddy if you try the wet final sections towards the sump at the bottom.
XandarModeratorWell done in getting through Don, it sounds like you had an easier time of it than the other two. I think you would have been fine beyond the Gripper if you remember the forum when you were planning this trip I said you would get wet there. Beyond it would have been fine. I have done it in very wet weather.
XandarModeratorWell here’s a quick video of the nicer bits of the caves to keep you going…
XandarModeratorOkay instead of reading it here, I have written it as agreed for our Journal. Chris, (Scaif) I have just e-mailed you can you let me know if you have gotten it or not?
XandarModeratorIt’s a pity you did not go down the 4th pitch, as you only go down a few meters and would be out of the water then. I have been down when it’s reasonably wet but I guess it was really wet when you did it.
XandarModeratorI do need to finish this off. I should upload my photo’s tonight but there won’t be many.
XandarModeratorGood report. This place and the walk back made me the coldest I have been for a long time. At least two years I think. I kept getting cold shivers that whole night and never took my coat and hat off despite being sat in-front of a lit fire until I went to bed.
XandarModeratorI actually took the high route this time (the bypass has a squeeze almost as tight but dry) and Rob asked me where the narrows where underneath me. Rob is the original thin man! Still hard to keep up!
XandarModeratorYes it was. I guess that was what you were thinking of. Yes that second crawl should be called splutter, as there was definitely some of that!
I hope I don’t come down with your dieaese, though it seems likely as I was in close proximity
XandarModeratorOh and unlike a certain BRCC trip 8 years ago, I went back through the crawl first before continuing to give Shaman his gear back. If I had not there probably would have been a Shaman popsical waiting for me.
XandarModeratorYes glad we brought that extra rope, turned out we needed all 3! Its always worth bringing extra tat when embarking on an unknown trip.
XandarModeratorI forgot to say well done on the fine in Fresnado, we have a good combined distance now! That big chamber sounds awesome . I see you did not go back after that second surveying visit. Is that it, or have you guys saved something for me, at Easter ? 🙂
