We struggled to find FCS top entrance but found another entrance. Didn’t stand out as being anything exciting and despite noting the amusing exit in the report I can’t recall what was so funny about it…

Long time back but I recall heading down slope from bottom of whatever numbered hole to arrive at obvious shored climb. This led to something – maybe a crawl – I certainly recall the way to the extensions being a crawl (possibly slightly wet) or straight on and dry leading to the ‘old’ cave..

These new anchors do the job: http://www.resinanchor.co.uk/6.html – for the “Wainwright style” topos.

Went to the downstream sump in Long Drop, with those tantalising avens making you wonder what more is to be found..

Rob, I doubt there’s a mobile signal in Foxup… And to be fair we didn’t know we were doing Pyg-Gill until we were on the way up (another reason why we don’t post on the forum – it’s a very flexible system we have, taking best advantage of the weather on the day etc).

Bloody hell, you could have walked up to us! We gave up posting on the forum a long time back as there was never any interest in our evening trips.

The descriptions in the NC books are very useful for night-time ventures like these – shame we didn’t have any with us this time! Good evening though, despite not seeing everything we intended to.

Just a quick point; if you went through the tube then you would be at the bottom of Boxhead.. (washed out passage might be tennis based – Venus/Serena?)

Nice report. The Ged mentioned is Ged Benn (BPC and NE-volunteer) to avoid any confusion. I think the heat, dampness and distance gave me sore feet!
I would liken Greensett to a Northern Dales cave – it is in Main Limestone, which no doubt explains it.

The drink afterwards left me bemused, personally I won’t be rushing back.

A return almost three weeks later with help from CNCC/NE saw the rubbish (collected/extracted from Cove) removed via vehicle.

Yes, a return needs to be made, at least that rock is gone now. The weather started OK, just descended to misery rather quickly! Chilly, oh yes, despite the shelter you get down by the gill and it was even worse so on the open fell/roadside; it was a very quick (Leck Fell winter style) change!!

As Rob will testify I most certainly didn’t have my caving head on. That with the aforementioned rustiness (only my 4th trip this year) and poor fitness meant I gave up too easily. I could have got through if I really tried- the exit from Gaze Gill was probably tighter, but that was out to daylight not heading further in..
The cave definitely warrants the grade, with sustained awkward going for most of the way!

Why not? You may have been unlucky, maybe had an open wound or etc, so many factors. Chances are slim though, more likely your dodgy culinary skills :D

If you feel the need to check then type Weils Disease or Leptospirosis in to a search and be overwhelmed with results. If you do suspect it then make haste to your GP armed with information (it’s so rare they might not believe you have it).

Having looked at the survey the bedding entrance would have led us to the upstream portion of Sweetwater, which we missed (must read NC in more detail before heading off on these adventures!)

The slit we dropped down and found too small to proceed is indeed Hallam Moss (again, survey shows location). It needs a small team armed with a bucket/tub to clear the water/mud then some rocks need removing from the floor. Perhaps then entry could be gained!

P101b, definitely need daylight to assess rigging options and less snow/ice around the edge of the hole. Looking at the Meregill survey it appears right underneath where we stood (the one flat ledge where we could see down to the water). The tree might be an option, although it wasn’t the healthiest looking specimen! I retreated a bit before the end due to cold (water was bloody freezing) and a dash of dehydration starting to kick in, took it steady exiting and only waited a few minutes for Rob to emerge.

And yes, I was knackered on Saturday! Worth it though.

Definitely worth descending those pitches at the end, as long as you’re not too well-built, makes a good round. Not one for the wet though as you pop out at Dismal Junction.
I was on a Red Rose trip in 1998 when some rope was left in situ on those pitches, not sure if it’s the same stuff though. Given the lack of visitors to that part of the system it’s possible as it should have survived!

Strange place, not the easiest after far too much food and drink over Christmas!

The walk to Grizedale would have been almost a mile with a few hundred foot height gain over pathless terrain – far from ideal given the cold windy night and our wet attire! Grizedale has an alternative name, Ftfagos Pot; I think we did just that…

To be fair we probably could have done Pool/Boundary despite water levels having definitely increased whilst we were underground. We would have been ok exiting Boundary (unless we had a problem on the way out that delayed us) but it would have been a much longer walk (over twice as far) back across a very wet and windy fell.
Brief dig notes appear in the exploration section.
